In Zoque aural tradition, mountains speak and volcanoes breathe. Chichonal is not merely a geographical feature, but a living being with will, memory, and character. During a stay in Zoque communities in northern Chiapas, I gathered words and phrases repeatedly heard in the voices of its people. From these oral memories, I composed a short poem and created a score of instructions performed here by Roman and Trinidad. Their voices preserve the cadence of shared speech and reveal how Zoque oral tradition personifies the volcano through storytelling.
